What is a Timeshare?

The most common question we get asked is “What is a Timeshare and how does it work?”.  Timeshares are a way to buy your future vacations at a deeply discounted rate.  Whether you want to stay at your home resort or exchange “your week” to travel to other places, Timeshare ownership allows you to stay at exceptional resorts for less than you would otherwise spend for discount hotel room.  If taking vacations, saving money and visiting amazing destinations interests you, you should learn about Timeshares.

When you buy a Timeshare, you buy a unit (A suite with two or three bedrooms, living room, dining area, kitchen and multiple bathrooms) for a specific week of the year.  There is a one-time purchase price and then, each year you pay a maintenance fee.  From that point forward, you own that unit for that week and can use it in a couple of different ways.

The most common way is to stay in your unit for the week that you own.  For example, let’s say that you purchase unit number 37 in week 32.  This would be a Townhouse with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining area, patio, two and a half bathrooms, and a hot tub room!  Each year you could stay in that unit for the 2nd week of August for the price of the maintenance fee. ($589) Considering Ellsworth hotel rooms at chain hotels in August cost between $300 and $500 per night, your Timeshare could pay for itself in the first year.  If you come up every year, you will save a bundle!

The second way to use your Timeshare is to make an internal exchange.  Imagine that you own the same unit and week as described above but you can’t make it in August, or you would like to see the fall foliage and try an autumn vacation.  If the Resort controls a unit on the week that you want, we can trade our unit in the fall for your unit in the summer for that particular year and you can stay for an exchange fee of $50.  (Exchange fees change depending on the potential rental value of the units involved in the trade.)

Perhaps the most exciting way to use your Timeshare is to Exchange it to stay at other resorts all around the world.  Acadia Village Resort partners with Interval International.  Interval International is an Exchange company affiliated with more than 3200 resorts.  To go to one of these other resorts, you give Interval International your unit (They call this “depositing” a unit) and they offer you units that owners at other resorts have deposited with them.  There are fees to exchange with Interval International but, even with those fees, you can get incredible vacation lodging for a fraction of the regular price.  For example, let’s say you want to go to Orlando in February, and you purchase a $200 off season Villa unit.  To exchange you must pay your Maintenance Fee ($619), an Interval International membership fee ($99), and an exchange fee ($229).  Including the purchase price, you are “all in” for $1147.00.  What can you get for that price?

Maybe you would like the Marriott Grande Vista.  This is a 4 ½ stars Resort and features 5 pools and hot tubs, 4 restaurants, a quiet lake offering paddleboat rentals, a marketplace, and a nine-hole golf course.  (go to intervalworld.com and check it out!)  You would get a private unit, including two bedrooms, one with a king-size bed and the other with two full-size beds.  Your unit has a living room, fully equipped kitchen, separate dining area, 2 bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and a private balcony.  While you paid $1147.00, someone coming in off the street would pay $2882.00 for the exact same unit and week.  When you become a Timeshare owner, you get a lot more “bang for your buck”!

Timeshare owners who use their ownership and prioritize their family vacations, love their Timeshares.
